Rachel's Green SmoothieTime: 5 minutes

Servings: 1

Ingredients:

½ cup frozen mixed berries
2 cups washed, torn greens*
1 small ripe banana
2 tbsp hemp hearts or chia seeds
1 tbsp flax oil
1 cup filtered water or coconut water (or more or less to taste)

Directions:

  1. Combine all ingredients in a blender in the order listed.
  2. Blend on high speed until smooth, adding additional water until desired consistency is reached. Depending on the blender this can take anywhere from 15 seconds to 1 minute.
  3. Pour into a glass and enjoy!

*Spinach or Swiss Chard are great to start with, as both are very mild in flavor when you are getting used to eating greens.  Try collards, kale, or dandelion greens to expand your repertoire as all will work well in this recipe and are extremely high in nutrients. Be sure to remove woody stalks from greens like kale and collards before adding the greens to the blender or your smoothie will never become smooth.

A recipe should only ever be a guide to get you started. Once you’ve mastered this version, experiment with different fruits, different greens, and other delicious ingredients like fresh nut milks, kefir, cacao nibs, and goji berries.
